Welcome to Independence Heights Super Neighborhood 13
Independence Heights, founded in 1915 as the first incorporated African American city in Texas, continues to be a beacon of resilience, culture, and community spirit. With a population of 12,623, our neighborhood stands at the intersection of history and progress—proud of its heritage and committed to building a strong, sustainable future.

Honoring Tanya DeBose
We pay tribute to Tanya DeBose (1972–2025), a fifth-generation resident, preservationist, and visionary community leader. Tanya served as Executive Director of the Independence Heights Redevelopment Council, chaired the Harris County African American Historical Commission, and advocated nationally for heritage protection. Her leadership was essential in the proposal of the Emancipation Trail and in championing Independence Heights as a cornerstone of African American history. Her legacy continues to inspire our civic work and community values.
